Gareth Morgan & Fundraising
September 2, 2010Financial commentator, philanthropist and KiwiSaver provider Gareth Morgan today announced that 93 people registered for his seminar on 7 September were not enough to make it worth his while to come to Gisborne, so the nearly $2,000 from ticket sales that was to be given to TMAV has been funded to those who registered.
We are disappointed about that and TMAV member Josh Wharehinga setup a FaceBook Group to show Gareth just how much support there is for him to come to Gisborne (or make a donation to TMAV for the Tauawhi Men’s Centre!): Click here for the FaceBook Group
We’ve also setup an online donation option for people who want to make a donation directly to TMAV for Tauawhi: Click here to make an online donation.
Thanks!

Tauawhi – Tairawhiti Men’s Centre opens
July 10, 2010Tauawhi Men’s Centre – A collaborative initiative to support Tairawhiti men and their whanau
The Tauawhi Men’s Centre opened on the 2nd of July 2010, with the support of over 100 people, including members of the TAIN network and the wider community. The centre opening is the culmination of a dream that many of us have had for a number of years. As we all know, the best things come through collaboration and the Tauawhi Men’s Centre epitomises this approach. With the support of Leslynne and the Family Works team, Vi and Te Whare Tu Wahine, an idea that Tairawhiti Men Against violence has had since 2007, was able to become a reality.
The centre itself is dedicated to the memory of Dr Pat Ngata, who has been a leading figure for men acknowledging family violence and working to address it, but also with his contribution to the wider wellbeing of men and their whanau. So it was fitting that his wife Ngaroma was on hand to cut the white ribbon, to start the opening.
Men are traditionally reluctant to ask for help and often feel “stigmatised” by traditional anger management programmes. With the increase of public awareness from the It’s Not OK campaign, there has been an increased demand for service provision for men and as we know, limited male specific intervention services. The recent changes to legislation will empowering Police and Courts to address family violence in new ways, may also add to this demand.
Centre acknowledges the extent of family violence incidents that occur in our community. We will be strongly focused on reducing the incidence of family violence by addressing the underlying causes. However, the centre will provide a holistic approach to providing information and resources for men. Men will be supported with parenting and family support, relationship counselling, grief and loss counselling, drug and alcohol counselling, gambling and addiction workshops.
The centre will also be a repository of resource information regarding education, health, social services and community agencies, local and central government agencies. So if you have any brochures etc that would be useful for Men, please feel free to drop them in as we have room on the stands!
The level of support that we received at the opening and since that time has been awesome, but we are also mindful that we will need that ongoing support to succeed in fully meeting the needs of local Men. We already have the offer of free legal advice from Phil Dreifuss and the team at Rishworth Wall & Mathieson, who will be at the centre by appointment fortnightly on Monday afternoons. Other services we are working on are a computer course and free health checks, so watch this space!
Tauawhi does not seek to replicate or compete with other services, but to work alongside existing providers in a complimentary way for a shared positive result. As well as being a place for Men to seek help, it this also a place for Men to offer it.
Opening hours for the centre are 10am-3pm Monday to Friday or by appointment outside these times by calling 8688278 or try us at tauawhi@gmail.com
